Graduate Nurse Residency Program

The Nurse Residency Program at Catholic Health is a comprehensive program that teaches and mentors new nurses in the transition from student to professional nurse during the first year of practice. This is an opportunity for our nurses to work in areas that they have an interest in, while getting the support and guidance needed to be successful in that role.

Throughout the program, residents will enhance their critical thinking and evidence based decision making skills, develop clinical leadership skills, build self-confidence, and learn how to provide safe and comprehensive patient care.

How much does this program pay? Does it differ from a registered nurse position?

Pay rates vary per facility and collective bargaining agreement. Rates do not differ between residency and non-residency positions.

Once I finish my nurse residency, do I have to reapply for an RN position?

No, it is a permanent position.

Should I wait until I pass my NCLEX board exam before I apply for a residency position?

Catholic Health offers a 3-day comprehensive NCLEX review class to all new graduates.

What if I am unsuccessful in passing my boards?

New York State will not allow a graduate nurse to continue working on a GN permit after they fail their boards; Catholic Health will transition the nurse to a nurse aide (NA) or immediate treatment assistant (ITA) until the graduate nurse passes their boards.
