I would like to share my story with you about the compassionate caregivers at Sisters Hospital where my husband, Paul, was a patient for about two months. I have many positive thoughts about the care we received, and I can’t decide what impressed me the most.
Maybe it was the ICU nurses who allowed me to stay overnight with Paul instead of making the long drive back to our home in Irving, NY. Or the floor manager who brought me lasagna because she knew I’d enjoy a home-cooked meal. Of course, then there is Dr. Bryan Butler who performed the surgery to treat Paul’s colorectal cancer and who kept me informed at every turn.
Paul was a true people person. He worked as a supervisor at a construction equipment company and always treated his associates the way he would want to be treated. He also raised beef cattle on our 52-acre farm and would fix tractors for other farmers in town who he knew needed the help. The exceptional care at Sisters Hospital meant a lot to Paul. We had previous experiences at other area hospitals and we both agreed that Sisters provided us truly exceptional treatment. Everyone at Sisters Hospital – from the many doctors involved in Paul’s treatment, to the nurses and aides, to the cleaning staff – showed genuine compassion not only to Paul, but to me, his wife of 23 years, and our children and grandchildren.
Paul left Sisters Hospital for a rehab facility, but sadly, he passed away due to complications from the cancer. He was 78 years old. When the staff learned of Paul’s passing they called me to express their condolences. Their care and compassion didn’t end when he left the hospital.
